Know Who Lord Mahavir Is And His Journey Towards Wisdom On Mahavir Jayanti

Commencing the celebration of wisdom, compassion, and enlightenment

In the Jain calendar, Mahavir Jayanti is a happy day that celebrates the birth date of Lord Mahavir, who is the 24th and final Tirthankara of Jainism. This day is very important for Jain people all over the world because it's when they honour the life, lessons, and lasting legacy of this respected spiritual leader.

The birth of Lord Mahavir

Lord Mahavir was born as Vardhamana Mahavira around 599 BCE in what is now Bihar, India. He gave up the joys of this world when he was 30 years old to go on a spiritual journey to find truth and enlightenment. He became a fully enlightened being, called a Jina or Tirthankara, after years of strict asceticism and deep meditation. This is when he reached Kevala Jnana, or knowledge. For the rest of his life, Mahavir worked to spread the lesson of peace, kindness, and spiritual freedom.

Ideas

The main ideas of Jainism, which stress Ahimsa (nonviolence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-attachment), are based on Mahavir's beliefs. These rules show Jain followers how to live a good life, grow spiritually, and break free from the circle of birth and death.

Approaches

As Mahavir Jayanti approaches, people who worship Lord Mahavir gather at Jain temples and places to pray, sing, and talk about religion. To celebrate his life and teachings, special ceremonies are held, such as readings from holy texts like the Kalpa Sutra and the Bhagavati Sutra, which tell the stories of Lord Mahavir's life and teachings.

  • To remember Mahavir's focus on love and kindness for everyone, followers also do acts of charity, humanity, and service. People show their appreciation for Lord Mahavir's blessings by giving to charity, giving food to those in need, and doing other kinds of community work. They do this to spread his teachings of compassion to all living things.
  • During Mahavir Jayanti celebrations, one of the most exciting events is the Rath Yatra, a big procession in which chariots with idols of Lord Mahavir are pulled through the streets while hymns and religious songs are chanted. The Rath Yatra is a representation of how Lord Mahavir's teachings spread to all people and encouraged them to follow the right way to enlightenment and goodness.
  • For Jain people, Mahavir Jayanti is also a time to think about their lives and start over spiritually. It gives them a chance to think about what Lord Mahavir taught them and reaffirm their dedication to Ahimsa, kindness, and self-realisation. Fasting, meditation, and self-discipline are things that devotees do to clear their minds and grow in their spiritual practice.

Along with its religious meaning, Mahavir Jayanti is important for people of all religions and backgrounds because it honours peace, harmony, and nonviolence. People are encouraged by Lord Mahavir's teachings to show kindness, respect for all living things, and a feeling that they are connected to everything in the world.
