IPL Recap: When RCB Upped Its Moolah Game

In a bold move ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, RCB made waves by acquiring Cameron Green from the Mumbai Indians in a high-profile trade valued at Rs 17.5 crore

Indian Premier League (IPL) is a testament to the global appeal and success of cricket. Among its many franchises, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stands out not only for its passionate fan base but also for its star-studded roster and significant investments in players. RCB's aggressive approach in player auctions has seen them secure top talent, both internationally renowned players and promising young prospects, to build a competitive squad.

In the following paragraphs, let's unveil the big-ticket signings that adorned the RCB roster.

Cameron Green (17.5 crores)

In a bold move ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, RCB made waves by acquiring Cameron Green from the Mumbai Indians in a high-profile trade valued at Rs 17.5 crore, making him their costliest player. However, Green could have performed better with the bat and ball, amassing only 33 runs and four wickets in eight matches. The only standout moment was his stunning 'one-handed' catch against KKR, dismissing Raghuvanshi off Yash Dayal's bowling. RCB is already out of the title race, so a redemption for Green will make little sense.

Kyle Jamieson (15 crores)

Making headlines in the 2021 auction, RCB secured the services of the New Zealand pacer for a staggering Rs. 15 crore. With nine wickets in nine matches and 65 runs coming from his bat, Jamieson could not prove his worth, as 2021 was his only IPL season. RCB did not retain him, and he has not played another IPL season since 2021. He also had a terrible economy of 9.61.

Glenn Maxwell (14.25 crores)

RCB splurged a whopping Rs. 14.25 crore to acquire the services of the Australian all-rounder in the 2021 auction. Maxwell lived up to the hefty price tag with remarkable performances, scoring 512 runs in the 2021 season and another 301 runs in 2022 while contributing nine wickets across both seasons. His consistent displays earned him a spot among RCB's retained players for the 2022 season, where he continued to shine, accumulating over 400 runs and claiming three wickets. Maxwell's excellence solidified his position as a critical player for the franchise. In 2023, he once again breached the 400-run mark, but Maxwell has been horrible this season, scoring only 32 runs in six games.

Yuvraj Singh (14 crores)

RCB secured the seasoned Indian all-rounder for a record-breaking Rs. 14 crore, making him the priciest Indian player during the 2014 auction. Despite high expectations, his inaugural season with RCB was a mixed bag. While he showed flashes of brilliance, including a memorable performance with 83 runs and four wickets in a single game, his overall contribution fell short. With 376 runs and five wickets across 14 matches, the veteran's impact didn't quite match the hype, leaving RCB disappointed with a 7th-place finish.

AB de Villiers (11 crores)

During the 2011 season, RCB made a game-changing move by acquiring the services of the legendary AB de Villiers for a princely sum of 11 crore. ABD quickly became a fan favourite and integral to the team's identity. He is known for his dynamic batting prowess and exceptional fielding skills. With over 4,491 runs for RCB at an average exceeding 40 and a strike rate touching 150, ABD epitomises the art of 360-degree batting, showcasing unparalleled mastery over the game's nuances. ABD's retirement saw RCB retire his jersey number and induct him into the hall of fame as the inaugural member, immortalising his legacy as a true RCB legend.
