IPL Recap: Top Four Clashes Between Mumbai And Punjab At Wankhede

In the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians have played multiple matches against each other at the Wankhede Stadium. Given how iconic the stadium is, especially because India won its second ICC World Cup trophy at the venue, let us recall some of the top clashes between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium situated on the picturesque coastal road of Marine Drive in Churchgate neighbourhood. 

Punjab won by one run, 2008

In the inaugural season, Mumbai hosted Punjab at their home, the Wankhede Stadium. KXIP emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, winning by just one run. Shaun Marsh was the star performer for Punjab, playing a brilliant knock of 81 runs off 56 balls, setting a solid foundation for the team. Luke Pomersbach provided valuable support with an unbeaten 79 off 50 balls, guiding Punjab to a competitive total of 189/4.

MI started their chase positively with contributions from Sanath Jayasuriya's 20 runs and captain Sachin Tendulkar's 65 runs. However, they lost wickets at crucial junctures, which hindered their chase despite Tendulkar's valiant effort. However, despite valuable contributions from Dwayne Smith's 20 runs and Abhishek Nayar's 27 runs, MI narrowly missed the target by just one run.

KXIP emerged victorious by seven runs in 2017

KXIP posted a massive total of 230/3 in their allotted 20 overs, courtesy of blistering batting performances from their top order. Wriddhiman Saha played a sensational unbeaten knock of 93 runs off just 55 deliveries, anchoring the innings with 11 fours and three sixes. Glenn Maxwell provided valuable support with a quickfire 47 off 21 balls, while Martin Guptill contributed with a brisk 36 at the top of the order.

MI put up a spirited chase but fell short of the target, scoring 223/6 in their 20 overs. Lendl Simmons was the top scorer for MI, smashing 59 runs off 32 balls, supported by Parthiv Patel's 38 at the top of the order. Kieron Pollard played a sensational innings, scoring an unbeaten 50 off just 24 balls, but it wasn't enough to secure victory for MI.

MI won by three wickets in 2019

Punjab put up a total of 197/4, with KL Rahul leading the charge with a magnificent unbeaten century. Rahul played a breathtaking innings, scoring an unbeaten 100 runs off just 64 deliveries, including six fours and six sixes. Chris Gayle provided valuable support with a rapid 63 off 36 balls, featuring three fours and seven sixes.

Mumbai Indians chased the target with explosive batting performances, led by Kieron Pollard's sensational innings. Pollard played a scintillating knock of 83 runs off just 31 balls, smashing three fours and a staggering ten sixes to single-handedly guide MI to victory. Alzarri Joseph contributed with a crucial unbeaten 15 off 13 balls to help MI cross the finish line.

Punjab won by 13 runs, 2023

Last year, in this thrilling encounter between PBKS and MI at the Wankhede Stadium, Punjab Kings emerged victorious by 13 runs. PBKS posted a formidable total of 214/8. Sam Curran emerged as the standout performer for PBKS, showcasing his prowess by smashing 55 runs off 29 deliveries, featuring an impressive tally of five fours and four sixes.

Other notable contributions came from Harpreet Singh, who scored 41 off 28 balls, and Jitesh Sharma, who scored 25 off seven balls, propelling PBKS to a commanding total. In their chase, MI put up a valiant effort but fell short of the target, scoring 201/6. Cameron Green was the top performer for MI, scoring a brilliant 67 runs off 43 balls, supported by valuable contributions from Rohit Sharma's 44 runs and Suryakumar Yadav's 57. Despite their efforts, MI couldn't chase the target, with Punjab Kings' bowlers, notably Arshdeep Singh, with four wickets, restricting them effectively.
