IPL Meets ISL: LSG to Wear Mohun Bagan Colours Against KKR

The RP Sanjiv Goenka Group is the owner of LSG as well as ATK Mohun Bagan, which will start using the name Mohun Bagan Super Giant from June 1.

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will play in their last Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter of the year on Saturday at Eden Gardens against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while donning the colours of the legendary football team Mohun Bagan.

The renowned green and maroon of Mohun Bagan will be worn by the cricket team, according to LSG's official Twitter account. "Our tribute to Mohun Bagan and the City of Joy," the post from the LSG Twitter handle mentioned.

Goenka's words

Shashwat Goenka, the owner of LSG, voiced the reason behind the decision to wear the iconic colours in a statement to the press.

"It is (Mohun Bagan) not an institution, it’s actually an emotion. It’s legacy represents the city of Kolkata," LSG team owner Shashwat Goenka said, as quoted by Sportstar, "It is with this in mind, that we have decided that LSG will don the iconic colours of maroon and green in Saturday’s match against KKR at Eden Gardens."

"It is our way of paying respect to the legacy of Mohun Bagan and to the legacy of our city."

"Not just Mohun Bagan fans, but hope all the residents of Kolkata will support us. For us, Kolkata is our home right. So, as much support as we can get, that’s what we would ask for," Goenka added.

With this, LSG wants to be in a game like it's their home ground on Saturday that both KKR and LSG must win to have a chance at the playoffs.

Krunal Pandya on the decision

Krunal Pandya, who is currently leading the Lucknow-based franchise in the absence of injured KL Rahul, also spoke about his excitement before the do-or-die match.

"Yes, I’m aware this year we won the (ISL) trophy as well. I’m aware of the team as well. In fact, I’m looking forward to seeing one of the games as well," said the LSG stand-in captain. He further hoped that they would have greater support than the home team.

"100 per cent (we would have more support). Obviously, wherever we go if we get more support it will boost your confidence. I request all the Mohun Bagan fans to come on Saturday and support us. Hope we do well against KKR," Krunal added.

LSG is on the verge of making the playoffs in consecutive seasons in the IPL as they sit third on the table with 15 points.
