The chances of KKR making it to the playoffs are next to nil
With nine points from 11 matches, the journey of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is almost over. However, there’s still a tiny flicker of hope, and therefore, we would rather not write off the Knights just yet before their clash against the Gujarat Titans.
Before their must-win match, let's see how KKR can still qualify, but their fate depends on their wins and other teams' results.
What does KKR need to do?

The answer is quite simple: KKR needs to win all three of their remaining matches in order to finish the table stage with 15 points. It would be even better if KKR wins these matches by larger margins to ensure their net run rate becomes positive, as it currently stands at -0.198. However, the victories and net run rate aren’t enough to ensure KKR’s place in the playoffs.

KKR also needs the Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings to lose their respective remaining matches. Punjab need to lose their remaining two matches; CSK must lose two of their three remaining games, and even Rajasthan must lose two of their remaining three matches.

Having lost the first six matches, KKR made a turnaround with four consecutive victories. However, the team botched up with a defeat at the hands of Bengaluru in Raipur, which sort of ended their journey. If KKR wins the remaining three matches and collects 15 points, a mid-table finish will definitely save them and their fan base from embarrassment after getting mocked in the first half of the season.
Fortunately, KKR is not the first team to face elimination this season.
AI’s prediction
Even AI has very little hope for KKR’s campaign. When ChatGPT was asked to calculate KKR’s chances, it generated, “KKR has only 2 per cent chances of reaching the playoffs, so they are mathematically alive but strategically almost out. A realistic target is to win all three and hope for a chaotic finish, but from the current table, I would not predict KKR to qualify.”
