Matheesha's stint at CSK so far

Pathirana joined the Super Kings in 2022. Despite not playing in many games, the right-arm bowler received praise from the now-41-year-old Dhoni.

Pathirana hasn't let his captain down when Dhoni has largely relied on him to deliver with the ball in the final overs. Pathirana ranks third among the Super Kings' top wicket-takers for the current season. In 11 games, he has taken 17 wickets at a 7.91 economy rate.

Pathirana is anticipated to get involved when CSK takes part in the IPL 2023 championship game on May 28 at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

Dhoni on Pathirana

Recently, Dhoni opined that Pathirana should stay away from playing Test cricket and other forms of cricket where the red ball is used.

"I personally think he is not someone who should play a lot of red-ball cricket. I think he shouldn't even get close to it. Even in white-ball cricket, the 50-over version, he should play as little as possible. [He should] play the big ICC tournaments because he is not somebody who will change a lot. This [having an impact in short bursts] is what he will do, so you can always use him at crucial times," Dhoni was quoted as saying.
