“I Wish I Could Have Played More" – Phil Jones Set to Leave Manchester United After 12 Seasons

Jones, who is 31 years old and has appeared in over two hundred matches for United, has had a difficult time with injuries throughout the last four seasons with the club and has made only 13 appearances since the 2019–20 season began.

Every story doesn't have a happy ending. Phil Jones might think how different his tale would be if he lived up to his potential in his early days. Manchester United legend Alex Ferguson touted him as having the potential to become the best Manchester United player of all time in 2013. Many events, big and small, happened between then and now, and unfortunately, Jones produced more football memes than on-field brilliance.

Statement from Jones

The centre back for Manchester United, Phil Jones, said on Friday that he will depart the team after 12 years when his deal with the club ends at the conclusion of the current campaign, after an extended absence due to injuries.

"My time at Manchester United has been nothing short of incredible," Jones wrote in an open letter to United fans. "To wear this shirt just once, to wear this badge and represent everyone associated with it, has been an honour.

"I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played amongst. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could. It’s not a time to be sad. It’s a time to look back, for me and my family, and be happy that I managed to live a dream at United."

Jones' career

Jones was a product of the Blackburn Rovers academy and was signed by Ferguson in 2011. Since then, he has appeared in 229 matches for the Red Devils. He won the 2012–13 Premier League and the 2016–17 Europa League with Manchester United. He also got 27 caps with the Three Lions.

Often acclaimed for his bulky build and ability to play in several defensive positions throughout the field, including centre back, right back, and defensive midfield, Jones was termed a prodigy in his initial years. Fabio Capello once considered him to be Italian legend Franco Baresi. However, several injuries and a lack of playing time killed his potential. Even though he will be famous for his aggressive style while defending.

"Our No.4 is now taking some time before deciding his next move, and everybody at United would like to wish Phil the very best of luck for the future," Manchester United said in a statement about his impending future at Old Trafford.
