As per Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) advisory, heatwave in several Indian states will continue while in some places, people may experience rainfall or even snowfall!

Don't get surprised to know that several Indian states are receiving snowfall in this summer! Indian climate is exceptionally unique with around six climatic subtypes, ranging from arid desert in the west (Rajasthan) to alpine tundra in the north (Himalayan region).

Extreme heatwave is often considered as silent killer. We, the humans are to blame for this heatwave. The year 2023 was the hottest year since global temperature records, which was started in 1850.

Community Level Initiatives:

Green Infrastructure: It includes green coloured house, roof, walls. This reduces heat absorption in warm months. To reduce heat, you can also set up vertical garden in your walls or at least in on balcony. Greens modify airflow patterns, as well as facilitate natural ventilation. The risk of summer overheating can be mitigated by following these infrastructures.

Shades: In community level, we need more shades. Natural shades are provided by trees, while we can also prepare artificial and temporary shades.

Rehydrate yourself in every hour. If you get bored of consuming water only, focus on different forms like coconut water which has lots of essential vitamins and minerals. It will keep your body internally cool. You can also drink buttermilk, which is a brilliant cooling agent. Focus on fruits with high water content like watermelon and cucumber.

Cold Shower Everyday: In summer, your day should start with a cold shower. There is no better way to make you feel refreshed than shower. Do not use dryer after taking bath. Wet head will make your body cool for a long time. You can take a second bath after the day's work in the evening or night. It will promote healthy sleeping habit.

Wear Comfortable Dress: Summer is all about embracing lightweight clothing, so that your body can remain cool. Use only natural fabrics like cotton.

Consume Light Food: Focus on eating small meal frequently. Heavy meal generally contain a high amount of fat and carbohydrates that produce a lot of heat inside. However, green veggies and fruits can make you feel light and cool.

Apply Sunscreen: There is a myth that sunscreen lotion is required only while going outside. But, on summer months, you need this even if you are inside your house. Opt for sunscreen with SPF value more than 50. Choose a waterproof sunscreen lotion so that it doesn't go away while sweating.

Protect Your Eyes: Sunlight has a massive impact on your eyes. So, wearing sunglasses is a must if you are going outside. This will protect your eyes from harmful UV rays too.

Embrace Electric Vehicle: Conventional vehicles contribute a lot behind global warming. Thus, we need to find a sustainable substitute. This can be achieved by embracing new technologies like electric vehicles.

Try to avoid going outside during 11 AM to 3 PM in summer months. If you feel dizziness, nausea, or lethargic, take a break, reenergize yourself and then focus on getting back to work.
