From 'Kaithi' to 'Master' and Beyond: Lokesh Kanagaraj's Box Office Hits Before 'Thalaivar 17’

Lokesh Kanagaraj is now all set to collaborate on a film with Rajinikanth. The Thalaivar 171 is now titled Coolie.

Lokesh Kanagaraj, the Tamil film director, screenwriter and producer, made his cinematic debut with a short film in the 2016 anthology Aviyal. His first feature film was Maanagaram (2017). However, when he tasted success with Kaithi (2019), he ended up creating the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). After Kaithi, the second installment in the franchise was Vikram (2022) with Kamal Haasan in the lead role. He then worked on Leo (2023), which remains his most successful film to date, being the third instalment in the LCU.

Now he is all set to collaborate on an upcoming film with Rajinikanth. The Thalaivar 171 is now titled Coolie, and its title teaser was shared recently. It is Rajinikanth’s first film with Lokesh, and the project is produced by Sun Pictures. Check out the first look.

Kaithi

The 2019 Tamil-language action thriller film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stars Karthi in the lead role, along with Narain, Arjun Das, Harish Uthaman, George Maryan, and Dheena in key roles. The film revolves around a released prisoner, who races against time to get poisoned cops to a hospital, with a hope to meet his daughter. Kaithi was released in 2019 ahead of the Diwali festival, and it became a box-office success, grossing ₹105 crore. A sequel, titled Kaithi 2, is in the making.

Master

The 2021 Tamil action drama film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stars Vijay in the lead role, alongside Vijay Sethupathi, Malavika Mohanan, Andrea Jeremiah, among others. It revolves around John Durairaj "J.D.", an alcoholic professor, and how he takes up a teaching job in a juvenile home but ends up clashing with a gangster named Bhavani.

Vikram

The 2022 Tamil  action thriller film stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role, alongside Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Narain, and more. It marks the second instalment in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, and is based on Vikram, a former commander of the black-ops squad's pilot batch, and how he plans to bring down Sandhanam, the runner of a drug syndicate Vetti Vagaiyara.

Leo 

Leo, a thriller film, features Vijay alongside Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Trisha, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and others. The third instalment in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, the film is inspired by A History of Violence. The film broke several box office records for a Tamil film, and became the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023, and the seventh highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, apart from being the third highest-grossing Tamil film of all time.
