In a country where football reigns supreme, a group of determined individuals have defied expectations, climbing the proverbial treetops of international cricket and securing a historic spot in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
This feat, achieved recently, marks a monumental moment in Ugandan sports history. It's a testament to the unwavering dedication of players, coaches, and the entire cricket community, who have nurtured the sport despite its niche presence in the nation.
"This is very uplifting and humbling," said Mike Nuwagaba, the chairman of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA), reflecting on the team's accomplishment. He emphasised the meticulous planning and execution that went into this three-year journey, highlighting its significance for aspiring cricket nations.
Captain Brian Masaba, a 32-year-old all-rounder, echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the global exposure this qualification brings. He sees it as an opportunity to showcase the potential of cricket beyond established cricketing regions.
This isn't Uganda's first foray into the world of international cricket. They've previously participated in the Under-19 World Cups in 2004, 2006, and 2022. However, this marks their inaugural qualification for the senior men's World Cup, a moment etched in history for both the team and the nation.
While Uganda might be considered an underdog on the international cricket scene, their team boasts players of considerable talent and experience. Veterans like Franco Nsubuga, a 43-year-old left-arm spinner with an exceptional economy rate in Twenty20 Internationals, showcase the dedication and talent within the team. "For me, it's a huge relief after all the years of disappointment and near misses," Nsubuga shared, expressing the emotions of countless players who have poured their hearts into the sport.
Cricket's introduction to Uganda can be traced back to the late 19th century, brought in by missionaries. Initially confined to missionary schools, the sport gained traction with the arrival of Asian workers. Over time, it transcended its initial boundaries, capturing the interest of the local population and fostering the development of homegrown talent.
While not the most popular sport in the country, Uganda has nurtured talented players like Juma Miyagi and Cosmas Kyewuta, renowned for their pace bowling. The cricket scene, centred primarily in the capital city of Kampala, boasts multiple international-standard grounds.
The team that competed in the African qualifiers in Namibia presented a beautiful mix of ethnicities and backgrounds. Players like Alpesh Ramjani, Dinesh Nakrani, and Ronak Patel, of Indian origin, alongside Riazat Ali Shah and Bilal Hassan, of Pakistani origin, combined their strengths with local talents, reflecting the diverse tapestry of Ugandan cricket.
Adding experience to the mix is Roger Mukasa, a skilled batsman and former U-19 World Cup participant. This blend of youthful talent and seasoned guidance proved to be a winning formula.
Uganda's journey in the qualifiers was marked by notable triumphs. They stunned Zimbabwe, a test-playing nation, and secured victories against regional rivals Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria.
