FIFIA WC 2022: Spain – Tons of International Trophies but Only One World Cup in Bag
The team full of all-stars has only managed a single World Cup trophy since 1934.
From Andoni Zubizarreta to Sergio Ramos, Spain has always produced magical players and all-star teams. On the international circuit, the team has won numerous trophies, but unfortunately, in the history of the World Cup, Spain has only won one trophy since 1934. This year, the squad is a mixture of young talents and veteran footballers who possess the mettle to reach the final.
Debut and first win
Spain made its debut in the FIFA World Cup in 1934 but picked up its first and only trophy in 2010; thanks to a screamer by Andres Iniesta. Apart from the 2010 final, the team never managed to reach the final in any other edition.
While the team has not done well in the World Cups, it has won back-to-back European championships, and FIFA Confederation Cups and became the FIFA Team of the Year from 2008 to 2013.
Players to watch
The team will heavily rely on young talents such as Gavi, Fati, Pedri, and Eric Garcia, as well as veteran players such as Ramos, Busquets, Thiago, and Carvajal. Athletic Bilbao’s Unnai Simon has been doing incredibly well between the goalposts, and therefore, he is likely to be the first-choice goalie.
Manager profile
Manager Luis Enrique is one of the biggest names in the world of football and has won numerous trophies with club Barcelona. The manager also led Spain to the semi-final round of Euro 2020 and finished second in the Nations League in the 2020–21 season.
In 2020, Enrique was accused of sending a squad full of Barcelona players to the Euros. The Spanish manager has yet to name the FIFA World Cup 2022 squad, but hopefully, it will comprise players from Real Madrid.
For the uninitiated, Pique is unlikely to feature in the World Cup given that he announced his retirement on Thursday night.
