Fastest South Africans to 200 Test wickets

Kagiso Rabada became the third fastest South African to reach 200 test wickets when he dismissed Hasan Ali in the first test match on the South Africa tour of Pakistan.

Dale Steyn - 39 matches

Dale Steyn is the fastest South African bowler to pick up 200 test wickets. He reached the milestone from 39 matches. Steyn achieved the feat against West Indies at the Port of Spain in June 2010.

The pacer made his debut in December 2004 and took just a little over five years to pick up 200 test wickets. Steyn went on to play 93 test matches for South Africa and picked up 439 wickets - the most by a South African bowler in test cricket - at an average of 22.95 and a strike rate of 42.3.

Steyn bowled at an economy rate of 3.24 and finished his test career with 27 4-wicket hauls, 26 5-wicket hauls and 5 10-wicket hauls. He is regarded as one of the modern greats and would have reached at least 500 scalps had he not been marred by regular injuries in the last leg of his career.

Allan Donald - 42 matches

White Lightning Allan Donald became the quickest South African bowler to pick up 200 test wickets - now the second quickest - when he bagged his 200th test scalp against Sri Lanka at Centurion in March 1998. Like Steyn, Donald also took under 6 years to register the feat.

Donald made his debut in April 1992 and took 42 test matches to pick up 200 test wickets. He finished his career with 72 test matches, having picked up 330 wickets at an average of 22.25 with the best of 8/71.

Donald pocketed 10 4-wicket hauls, 2 5-wicket hauls and 3 10-wicket hauls. He bowled at a strike rate of 47.0 and an economy rate of 2.83.

Kagiso Rabada - 44 matches

Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the South African bowlers in the first test match on the South Africa tour of Pakistan in 2021. Rabada bagged figures of 3/70 in the first innings and became the quickest South African bowler to pick up 200 test wickets in the process.

Rabada made his test debut against India at Mohali in 2015 and has grown from strength to strength. The under 19 sensation has already picked up 9 4-wicket hauls, 9 5-wicket hauls and 4 10-wicket hauls in his young career.
