Seattle gets called the Emerald City because it's so green all year round. It's not because of emeralds or The Wizard of Oz, but because of all the trees. Even in the winter, you'll see lots of greenery because of the evergreen trees that grow everywhere around the city. The nickname also connects to Washington State's nickname, The Evergreen State, even though not all of the state is green.

Seattle wasn't always called the Emerald City. It got its nickname from a contest held in 1981 by the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The name "Emerald City" was chosen in 1982 from contest entries. Before that, Seattle had other nicknames like the Queen City of the Pacific Northwest and the Gateway to Alaska.
