Yashasvi Jaiswal’s back-to-back double hundreds against England in 2024 have rewritten cricketing history, one six and one stat at a time
The English summer of 2025 is just around the corner, and the mood in the Indian camp feels more uncertain than upbeat. With a brand-new captain in Shubman Gill and no Ashwin, Kohli, or Rohit to turn to, India’s quest for a long-overdue Test series win in England appears steeper than ever. Since 2007, they’ve come, they’ve tried, but they haven’t conquered.
Yet, in the midst of this changing guard, one name stood tall and unfazed—Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young opener didn’t just shine during England’s 2024 tour of India—he lit up the series with back-to-back double centuries. Not once, but twice, he tore through the English bowling with a mix of power, precision, and pure intent.

Following a solid start in the third Test at Rajkot, Jaiswal was compelled to walk off on 104 due to back pain. Most batters would have called it a day. However, Jaiswal returned the next morning and hammered an unbeaten 214. That, mind you, came on the back of a 209 in the previous Test.
He became only the third Indian to notch up double hundreds in consecutive Tests, following in the footsteps of Vinod Kambli (1992/93) and Virat Kohli (2017/18).
Vinoo Mankad did it in the 50s. Kohli did it in the 2017/18 season. And now, Jaiswal joins them. Scoring two double tons in a single bilateral series is rare territory, and the left-hander has elbowed his way into elite company.

Jaiswal literally sent the English bowlers into orbit. With 12 sixes in a single innings, he equalled the world record set by Wasim Akram in 1996.
Veteran James Anderson was treated no differently. Jaiswal struck three consecutive sixes in one explosive over, falling just short of Kapil Dev’s iconic record of four in four balls. The over cost England 21 runs, Anderson’s third-most expensive in his Test career.
Here’s an eye-catching stat: every single one of Jaiswal’s Test hundreds till the 2024 England series—171, 209, and 214*—has surpassed the 150-run mark. That consistency in converting starts into mammoth scores places him in elite company alongside the likes of Brian Lara and Javed Miandad. Only Graeme Smith had a better conversion rate during the early stages of his Test career.
Moreover, later in 2024, Jaiswal scored 161 against Australia in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, adding yet another entry to his growing list of 150-plus scores.

With 545 runs in just three Tests, Jaiswal was already ranked fifth among Indian batters for the most runs in a series against England. He was only behind Kohli (twice), Rahul Dravid, and Sanjay Manjrekar. Subsequently, he surpassed Kohli’s 655-run record (2016/17) with a total of 712 runs in the series.
Perhaps the most unique stat of them all—Jaiswal is possibly the first Indian batter to score two separate centuries in one Test innings. Retired hurt on 104, returned hours later, and stitched 110 more. It was two innings for the price of one—except the scoreboard showed a single, mighty 214*.
