Born Gouranga Chakraborty in Kolkata, he witnessed political turmoil and personal transformation in early life. After graduating from the Film and Television Institute of India, he entered showbiz with Mrigayaa (1976)—a serious film earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. However, it was finally with Disco Dancer (1982) that his star truly exploded.
The film, Disco Dancer, ended up becoming a phenomenon – thanks to its soundtrack, unforgettable dance numbers, and the storyline. It was a hit not only in India but also in the Soviet Union, Middle East, and parts of Africa of the time. He could dance, fight, cry, and charm—all in the same scene, and that was novice to Indian cinema. In fact, his character, Jimmy, and the song “I Am a Disco Dancer” turned iconic.
