Craft Your Own Fragrance At Home: A DIY Guide to Prepare Perfume With Essential Oils
Did you know that oil-based fragrances use essential oils and can be prepared at home?
Looking for your signature fragrance is a lot like finding your soulmate. You might be fond of a particular brand, prefer a specific fragrance family, or have a favorite perfume. But if your go-to fragrance does not entice you anymore, or let’s say, you haven't still found the scent that truly defines your taste—learning the art of crafting perfumes at home with essential oils may help please your olfactory senses.
Start with the base note.
The first step involves creating the base note. Perfumers often use earthy scents for the base note to provide a long-lasting fragrance to the perfume. The base note constitutes 5 to 20 percent of the blend (the concentration may vary). You can choose scents like sweet almond oil or grape-seed oil for the base note. But if you are confused and don’t know which scent to pick, go for 25-30 drops of rose essential oil for a floral blend or 20 drops of orange essential oil for an earthy fragrance.
Work on the middle note.
The middle note is the heart of the perfume—the fragrance that lingers after the top note dissipates. Floral fragrances are commonly used for the middle note, but you may go for other scents too. The middle notes comprise the largest portion of the blend ( almost 50-80 percent). If you want an energizing and fresh-smelling fragrance, add 14-16 drops of ginger essential oil, and for a romantic and floral blend, pour 10-12 drops of lime essential oil.
Craft the top note.
The last addition to your hand-crafted perfume should be the top note, which fades quickly, but it is also the first fragrance you get when taking a whiff of the perfume. The top note typically constitutes 5 to 20 percent of the concentration. You can choose a minty, fruity, or refreshing aroma for your perfume’s top note.
Blend your formula
After gathering all the ingredients, mix the essential oils in the following manner: Use a dropper to pour 80 drops of carrier oil into a clean and dry perfume vial or bottle; Use another clean dropper for adding each notes—ten drops of the essential oil you picked for the base notes, five drops of the top note, and five drops of the middle notes. Close the perfume bottle and shake it thoroughly to blend all the ingredients. Remember to store the perfume bottle in a dark and cool place.
