The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is all set to take place from May 14 to 25. While the film festival is known for his red carpet fashion, it cannot go unnoticed that the film lineup at Cannes is nothing short of perfect. In fact, last year’s Cannes lineup included eight films that went on to be nominated for Oscars, such as Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest and Killers of the Flower Moon. Now as fans and cinephiles gear up for the next edition at the illustrious French showcase, here’s a list of 6 interesting films that you just cannot afford to miss:
Almost after 10 years since the release of George Miller’s high-octane Mad Max: Fury Road released into cinemas, the filmmaker is back with an ambitious prequel featuring Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular road warrior. She heads out on a journey across the wasteland to the citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. Joining her is Chris Hemsworth as a moustache-twirling warlord, along with Tom Burke.
Yorgos Lanthimos’s follow-up to Poor Things takes off from Victorian London to the present, and features double Oscar winner Emma Stone. The three-part sci-fi anthology stars Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons and Mamoudou Athie, and is one of the most awaited films on the block.
Ali Abbasi left everyone impressed at Cannes in 2018 with the Swedish fantasy Border. He followed it up in 2022 with the Persian-language thriller Holy Spider. Now, he is back with a detailed account of Donald Trump’s rise in ’70s and ’80s New York in The Apprentice. It has Pam & Tommy’s Sebastian Stan donning the blonde wig to play the younger version of the former president. Meanwhile, Jeremy Strong plays the role of Roy Cohn, the prosecutor. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’s Maria Bakalova features the real estate tycoon’s first wife, Ivana, while Martin Donovan stars as his businessman father, Fred Trump.
The film marks Francis Ford Coppola’s first big-screen release since 2011, and is one of the most-talked-about Palme d’Or contenders. The film is a cautionary tale about America’s future, and features an ensemble cast, including Adam Driver and Aubrey Plaza to Giancarlo Esposito, Chloe Fineman and Nathalie Emmanuel.
Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Édgar Ramírez, and trans actor Karla Sofía Gascón headline this musical crime caper. The film is helmed by Jacques Audiard, a Cannes regular and Palme d’Or recipient Jacques Audiard, and revolves around a lawyer who receives an unexpected request to help a formidable Mexican cartel boss in his personal and professional ventures.
The blood-soaked feminist horror film features Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, and is directed by Coralie Fargeat, known for her 2017 action movie Revenge. The pulpy delight is one film to watch out for.
