Bumrah Blasted: Five Times When the Yorker Master Got Mauled!

A look at Jasprit Bumrah's most expensive overs in the IPL, where even the yorker king gets taken to the cleaners

Jasprit Bumrah, the name synonymous with accuracy and yorkers in the Indian Premier League (IPL), hasn't always been immune to big hits. While he's known for dismantling batting lineups, there have been occasions where batsmen have taken him to the cleaners. Let's revisit five such instances where Bumrah conceded the most runs in a single over, showcasing that even the best bowlers can have an off day.

5. 20 runs vs. CSK (IPL 2018)

The opening match of IPL 2018 was a nerve-wracking affair. The Mumbai Indians, after setting a modest target of 165, needed their bowlers to weave magic to defend it. With the Chennai Super Kings needing 27 runs in the last two overs, the pressure was immense. Captain Rohit Sharma entrusted the crucial 19th over to Bumrah, hoping to restrict the flow of runs.

Dwayne Bravo, the 'finisher' known for his late-inning heroics, unleashed his power-hitting prowess. He launched three towering sixes and a cheeky double, collecting a massive 20 runs off Bumrah's over. Though Bravo fell soon after, CSK managed to scrape through for a dramatic win in the final over.

4. 20 runs vs. RPS (IPL 2016)

The 2016 season opener between the Mumbai Indians and the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPSG) was a forgettable outing for Bumrah. Batting first, MI could only manage a below-par score of 121 runs. Bumrah, starting economically, conceded just 10 runs in his first two overs. However, the third over of the powerplay exposed some chinks in his armour.

Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis, the RPSG openers, took advantage of Bumrah's slight loss of line and length. Rahane chipped in with a boundary, while du Plessis cashed in on two loose deliveries by slamming consecutive sixes in the last two balls. This expensive 20-run over dented MI's bowling plans early on, and RPS chased down the target comfortably.

3. 21 runs vs. CSK (IPL 2021)

The 2021 clash between the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings was a classic display of experience versus audacity. CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali provided a solid foundation, laying the groundwork for a strong total. In the 17th over, with Bumrah on the bowling end, the tide seemed to be turning in MI's favour.

However, Ambati Rayudu, the new batsman at the crease, had other plans. He audaciously launched a full-blown assault on the seasoned pacer. Rayudu's clean hitting—two towering sixes and a scorching four—fetched him a staggering 21 runs off Bumrah's over.

2. 25 runs vs. RCB (IPL 2015)

The 2015 season witnessed a batting masterclass by the Royal Challengers Bangalore duo of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. After Chris Gayle's early dismissal, the stage was set for these two batting giants to take centre stage. Bumrah, bowling the 17th over, found himself at the receiving end of some brutal hitting.

Kohli, known for his impeccable timing, smashed a four and a six, while de Villiers, the 'Mr. 360°, unleashed his power with back-to-back sixes. This exhibition of power-hitting fetched RCB a massive 25 runs off that over, propelling them to a dominant total and a comfortable win.

1. 27 runs vs. KKR (IPL 2020)

Mumbai Indians, batting first in a 2020 encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders, could only manage a total of 195. The 18th over of KKR's chase witnessed an unexpected turn of events. Bumrah, known for his ability to restrict batsmen in the death overs, faced the wrath of Pat Cummins, the Australian all-rounder.

Cummins, in a display of brute force, launched four monstrous sixes off Bumrah's bowling, collecting a record-breaking 27 runs in that over. While KKR ultimately fell short by 49 runs, this over went down in IPL history as Bumrah's most expensive.
