Vinoo Mankad 23.12
Not remembered for the best of reasons, Vinoo Mankad was a seriously talented cricketer and the stats speak for themselves. Mankad represented India in test cricket between 1946 and 1952 against England and picked up 54 wickets at an average of 23.12.
He maintained an economy rate of 1.82 and a strike rate of 75.9 against the opposition, picking up 3 5-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul with the best of 8/55.
BS Chandrasekhar 27.27
BS Chandrasekhar picked up a total of 95 wickets against England in test cricket – the most by any Indian bowler. He had an average of 27.27 against the opposition and claimed 8 5-wicket hauls with the best of 8/79.
Chandrashekhar retired in 1979, having taken 242 wickets from 58 test matches at an average of 29.74 with 12-4 wicket hauls, 16 5-wicket hauls and 2 10-wicket hauls. He even represented India in one ODI match and picked up three wickets.
Ravichandran Ashwin 28.59
Ravichandran Ashwin has maintained an average of under 30 against England which is incredible given that Ashwin has played a fair amount of cricket in England as well. Ashwin has an average of 28.45. Having played 19 matches against England, he has picked up 88 wickets at a strike rate of 61.8 and an economy rate of 2.77.
Ashwin also has 6 5-wicket hauls against England and is a killing machine particularly against left handers who are like walking ducks in front of the wizard.
Zaheer Khan 29.02
Zaheer Khan is the only pace bowler in this list. He played his first test match against England in 2002 while his last came in 2012. He represented India in 13 test matches against England, picking up 43 wickets at an average of 29.02, an economy rate of 2.72 and a strike rate of 63.8.
Zaheer has only one 5-wicket haul against England which was his best of 5/75. He bowled a total of 457 overs against England and conceded 1248 runs.
Bishan Singh Bedi 29.7
Bishan Singh Bedi also had an average of under 30 against England as he picked up 85 wickets in test matches against the opposition. Bedi played his first test match against England in 1967 and the sequence continued for another 12 years. The spinner claimed 4 5-wicket hauls against the opposition.
