Artificial Intelligence: 10 interesting facts you probably didn’t know

As Artificial Intelligence is developing at a very rapid speed, it’s good to know some interesting facts about it.
Artificial Intelligence or AI can be defined as, “The ability of a computer or computer – controlled robot to do tasks that are usually associated with human intelligence.” It has gained a lot of attention in the past few years and is playing a key role in developing several industries such as agriculture, education, finance, transportation, manufacturing etc. Here, we have gathered some amazing AI facts that you probably didn’t know about.
- The idea of Artificial Intelligence first came up in 1942, by a science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. In his short story ‘Runaround’, he wrote about machines, robots and convergence of intelligence and introduced Three Laws of Robotics:
- i) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- ii) A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law.
iii) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
- In 1955, a Stanford University professor named John McCarthy first thought up the term ‘Artificial Intelligence’.
3 According to a report by PWC, the AI enabled activities will help global GDP to rise by around 14% by 2030.
- Turing Test is the way of determining whether a computer is capable to think like a human being or not. The test was originally called ‘The Imitation Game’ and it was done in 1950 by Alan Turing, an English computer scientist, mathematician, cryptanalyst and biologist.
- A Russian-designed AI called Eugene was the first that passed the Turing Test, in 2014.
- Ask any question to Siri, Cortana, Alexa or Google Assistant and they will answer you with a beautiful female voice. The major reason behind this is that both males and females love female voice much more than male voice.
- Using artificial intelligence, the roboticists have developed a new methodology that can read human mind.
- If you love pets but hate to do all the things like feeding them or cleaning up, then there’s some good news for you. In the next few years, there will be AI pets that look and act exactly like real pets.
- A lifelike humanoid called Sophia has got a guaranteed citizenship in Saudi Arabia. This has created a lot of controversies around the world.
- Because of this technology, millions of people are already out of their jobs and soon, AI will replace many other human workforces.
Artificial Intelligence is, as Stephen Hawking said, “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity. We do not yet know which.”
