'Kaun Banega Crorepati', without an iota of doubt, is one of the most loved reality shows on Indian television. What sets the show apart is that it's much more than its questions and answers. "To me, KBC is not just another game show. It is to me an experience that could become life-changing for any human." - Big B.

Well, it's Amitabh Bachchan's innate charm, wisdom, and presence of mind that has made KBC what it is today. And likewise, the show has also played an integral role in his career.

Amitabh Bachchan Went Almost Bankrupt Just Before KBC Happened

The late 90s, specifically the year 1999, was the worst phase in Bachchan's life. All his films were failing at the box office, and the craze of him among the masses was dying. What's more, his business venture, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd (ABCL), faced major losses, leaving him in huge debt. He owed more than ₹90 crore to different people, and there were about 55 legal cases against him. The producers started avoiding him, and creditors used to bang on his doors every day for money. He was on the verge of losing his house as well.

In his words, "There was a phase in my life when I went bankrupt. The company I had built suffered losses, I had debts, and my personal bank balance was zero. All my avenues to earn were shut and the government had raided my house."

Amitabh Bachchan got emotional recalling the incidents

By 2000, Bachchan realized he had to try something absolutely out of the box and bring a fresh image of himself in front of the audience.

‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ Happened And Changed Big B's Life

That's when Big B was approached by Star TV's Sameer Nair to host 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (an Indian version of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire') on television.

The megastar was initially skeptical about doing the show but decided to go for it. In his words, "Everyone was against my doing television. Jaya was opposed to it vehemently. During those times, television meant a scaling down of an actor's career. But somehow I didn't see it that way. To me, it was a new beginning."

"The show began in 2000. At that time, I had no idea. However, my circumstances were such that I wasn't getting any work in the films at that time. But after the show premiered, the kind of reactions I received made me believe that the world has changed for me."

Amitabh Bachchan on KBC set

The pilot episode of KBC was aired on Star Plus on July 3, 2000. And when the episode ended, the entire nation went crazy about it. It completely changed how television was consumed in India at the time. And Bachchan, who had almost gone bankrupt, saw a new turn in his career. In just a few weeks, he reached a new height of stardom, becoming a favorite of everyone... all over again!

Well, there has been no looking back since then. For more than two decades (apart from season 3) now, Bachchan has been the host of the show, winning over the hearts of millions.
