5 young female Bollywood choreographers you should watch out for

A new crop of female choreographers has emerged in Bollywood, lets take a look.

As we all know, songs and elaborate dance sequences are an integral part of Indian cinema. And while we see our B-town celebs aceing their complex moves on the screen, there’s a lot more that goes behind it. The credit actually goes to the choreographers who call the shots behind the camera. From late Saroj Khan and Farah Khan to Vaibhavi Merchant or Geeta Kapoor and Ahmed Khan, there have been a lot of famous choreographers in Bollywood. However, there is a new crop of choreographers who have emerged in tinsel town who are experimental and totally worth looking out for. Let’s take a look:

Kruti Mahesh

Former Dance India Dance participant, Kruti Mahesh, is known for choreographing the song ‘Ghoomar’ in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat. For the film, she also won the National Award for best choreography in 2018. She has received formal training under Guru Vasanta Ji and ever since she participated in the second edition of Dance India Dance, there’s been no looking back since then. After getting guidance from choreographers Terence Lewis and Remo D’Souza, she trained under the latter in the song ‘Deewani Mastani’ from the Bajirao Mastani and Street Dancer 3D as well.

Shakti Mohan

Shakti Mohan has certainly inspired several young girls to follow their passion. After emerging as the winner of Dance India Dance 2, she was seen as a contestant of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2014. Shakti has assisted Vaibhavi Merchant on Dhoom 3 and her first solo song was ‘Nainowale Ne’ from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat.

Shampa Gopi Krishna

After impressing the audience with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 along with her partner and late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, she won the show in later years with actor Gurmeet Choudhary as her partner. Daughter of veteran dancer Gopi Krishna, she is trained in Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Odissi and has co-choreographed the song ‘Ang Laga De’ from Goliyon ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela.

Rujuta Vaidya

She has made celebs like Priyanka Chopra and Britney Spears dance to her moves and has received training from legendary choreographer Saroj Khan. From AR Rahman’s performance for Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars to Priyanka Chopra’s NFL promo In My City, she has done it all.

Sneha Kapoor

She is popularly known as ‘The Indian Salsa Princess’ as she has popularised Indian salsa on the global platform. Sneha was part of Dance India Dance 3, and has choreographed Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Heroine.
