Vincent Van Gogh is probably one of the most famous painters in the world! His paintings have mesmerized the world. The level of imagination and creativity involved in his paintings is enough to make one gape with amazement. Though a tragic life which involved him cutting off his ear and voluntarily entering a mental asylum, Van Gogh was a genius! Here are some of his paintings which have mesmerized the world!

1) Starry Night  ( 1889)- Starry Night is undoubtedly Van Gogh’s most popular painting, and has been a source of immense fascination and frequently reproduced, copied, and adapted by later painters! It is also a source of fascination for scientists and is said to incorporate complex scientific concepts, such as turbulence and luminescence. It is magnificent and no matter how many times you look at it, it will still strike you every time! It is part of a series of paintings called “The Nocturne”.

2) Van Gogh’s Self-portraits –Van Gogh painted many self-portraits. It is beautiful and touching to see the artist’s impression of himself. Though for the artist the prime motivation was to practice painting people, for the spectator looking at these paintings is significant as it often reflects Van Gogh’s state of mind at a particular point in time, his anguish. Experts say that it is important to look at the background, which provides this hint!

3) Café Terraces at Night ( 1888)- Café Terrace at Night is an 1888 oil painting by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting is based on a real café called Arles’Place Du Forum, in the southern part of France. It is said to be the first in a series of paintings in which he used starry backgrounds.

4) Vase with 15 sunflowers ( 1888) – Van Gogh’s painting of sunflowers depicted happiness, brightness and optimism. Yellow, the predominant colour in this work( as well as in his other works) happened to be Van Gogh’s favourite color. People are divided however in their opinion as to why. While the usage of yellow is assumed by some to be a result of colour blindness, others interpret the extensive use of yellow as his search for happiness, that despite the sorrow that he faced, he was looking for happiness, and yellow sunflowers were something which depicted Van Gogh's hope!

5) Wheatfield with Reaper and Sun ( 1889)- This is a series of paintings with a man reaping a wheat fold under a bright early morning sun! The colour palette makes these paintings mesmerizing. Yellow is extensively used here too!
