The Importance of Biodiversity Conservation

Why do we need to protect our planet's species?

Biodiversity plays a crucial role, and it is important to conserve it. Biodiversity can be summed up effectively as a complete total of inhabitants on the earth. To be more precise, it combines all the life forms on the planet.  Biodiversity itself means the diversity of all the biological species present on the earth. The richness of all these species suggests that the biodiversity of the specific place and hence the biodiversity can be effectively evaluated and compared to all the areas. The biodiversity of the Tropic region is known to be the richest, accounting for at least 90% of the world's species because tropical regions account for 10% of the world's total area.

The different elements of biodiversity are mentioned:

Genetic biodiversity

The variety in the genetic makeup of that species of a specific area is known as genetic biodiversity. Genetic diversity means the unique traits of the organisms present on the planet.

Species diversity

The diversity of the specific variation of different species of the region is termed as the species given in population besides the distribution.

Ecosystem biodiversity

Ecosystem biodiversity is all about the similarities and differences between the ecosystems on the planet.

Reasons why biodiversity should be conserved

Conservation of biodiversity means sustaining the diversity present in the ecosystem. Considering that today's context is the pace at which several species are on the verge of extinction, it's pretty alarming. The ecosystem balance is hindered by the loss of several species as all the species on earth are interconnected in different ways. So the loss of 1 species would be a threat to the existence of another. The products and services obtained from flora and fauna globally are aplenty. The removal of natural vegetation for development is putting stress on that ecosystem.

· It is essential for preserving the diversity of the species.

· It also helps sustainably manage and utilise ecosystems and species.

· Biodiversity conservation is essential for economic development and getting rid of poverty.

· As the agricultural sector ultimately depends on biological diversity, its loss would lead to minimum agricultural production.

Factors that affect biodiversity

The biodiversity of a place is set to vanish or face the extension threat if the natural habitat is destroyed. Extinction of another species could directly affect all the species, which is another reason species are already dependent on each other. Some factors that affect biodiversity include pollution, hunting, poaching, illegal trade, and natural competition among the species.
