Michael Vaughan currently sits at the top in terms of most victories for England in test cricket as captain. Vaughan led England in 51 test matches and won 26 of them while losing 11.

Michael Vaughan finished with a win loss ratio of 2.36. The biggest achievement of his career was the 2005 Ashes series victory, which is also considered by many as the greatest test series of all time.

Joe Root - 25

With England in superb form ever since the return of cricket after the COVID-19 break, Joe Root is also taking big strides towards being the most successful England captain and currently stands just behind Michael Vaughan with 25 victories. The moment he registers 2 more wins as England captain, he will overtake Vaughan to become the most successful England captain of all time.

Alastair Cook - 24 

Cook finished with exactly the same number of test victories as Strauss after he retired in his early 30s. Cook captained England in 59 test matches and finished with 24 wins and 22 losses. 13 test matches were drawn as Cook ended up with a win loss ratio of 1.09.

Not only did Cook have a decent record as skipper, he finished as the highest run scorer for England in test cricket with over 12000 runs at an average of 45.35. Cook represented England in 161 test matches and struck 33 centuries and 57 half centuries. He played his last test match against India at The Oval in September 2018.

Peter May - 20 

Peter May led England in 41 test matches. Under his leadership, the team won 20, lost 10 and drew 11 games.
