Manish Pandey's contrasting IPL returns in victory and defeat

While Manish Pandey averages 42.94 (8 X 50s) in defeats for SRH, surprisingly, his average slips to 24.00 (2 X 50s) in victories. Manish Pandey is one of those players who have been part of the IPL since its inception. Pandey was part of the same under-19 batch as ViratKohli and was one of the contenders to represent India over a long period of time. Although he was successful in representing India, he could not have an extended run with the side. In the IPL, Pandey averages over 30 with a strike rate of 121.36. The batsman has scored 3369 runs from 149 IPL matches with 1 century and 19 half centuries. His best of 114 not out came in the second Edition of the IPL in 2009 for Royal Challengers Bangalore. That year, Pandey averaged 84 with the bat and struck at 142.37. He did not have quite an impressive season next year and could manage an average of only 20.75 and strike rate of 110.1 7. In IPL 2011, he switched franchises and moved to Pune Warriors India where he remained for three years till 2013. Those years were not very productive for Pandey as he could never touch an average of 30 or a strike rate of 130 with the franchise. In 2014, Manish Pandey was roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders and played for the franchise till 2017. His best year in the IPL till now came with KKR in 2014 when he made over 400 runs at an average of 30.4 and a strike rate of 117.98 with the help of two half centuries and the best of 94. In 2015 and 2016 as well, he made over 200 runs and his strike rate began to go up. Sunrisers Hyderabad picked him up in the auctions ahead of IPL 2018 and he has remained with the franchise since then. However, in modern day T20 cricket, when a strike rate of 130 is considered about par, Pandey has not managed to get off the blocks quickly. He barely managed to reach a strike rate of 130 in IPL 2019 and 2020 despite sporting a decent average. This is the reason why his place in the Sunrisers Hyderabad playing XI came under threat in IPL 2021. To add to that, Manish Pandey does not have flattering statistics in the team's victories as he averages below 25 in matches that SRH have gone on to win in the IPL, which is a cause for concern.
