Famous sweets of West Bengal

Bengali people are known to be very sweet people and it is probably because of their love for sweets.

A sweet or two at the end of a meal is just like the perfect ending of a love story. And in Bengal, sweets after meals have been continuing for ages. Furthermore, offering sweets and being passionate about it have deeply engraved in the Bengali culture. And for this reason, West Bengal has been the creator of some of the heavenly sweets on earth. Morobba from Birbhum District

Another famous thing in the Birbhum district apart from Shantiniketan is Morobba. This fascinating sweet has only two ingredients, seasonal fruits like mango, pineapple, orange etc., and sugar, and there is no use of preservatives. Even “Murabba”, which is a popular sweet in the rest of India, has been exported from here.

Kheer Doi from Nabadwip

Mishti Doi, which is known as sweet curd, is a very intrinsic part of the Bengali diet. It is served at the end of a heavy meal on every Bengali occasion. However, this popular sweet gets a very delicious twist in Nabadwip and has become Kheer Doi of Nabadwip. It is made by boiling the milk constantly, which reduces it to curd but also forms a thick layer known as kheer; and it makes the doi taste incredible. Also notable is the fact that the recipe is 150 years old.

Patishapta During Makar Sankranti

This sweet from West Bengal is a seasonal sweet and has no particular origin. It is made during the time of Makar Sankranti and is made only during the Bengali month of Poush. It is a pancake roll that is stuffed with the filling of coconut and jaggery. It is a household sweet made mainly by grandmothers and mothers and is almost as sweet as theirs.

Shor Bhaja From Krishnanagar

Krishnanagar has many iconic things, but Shor Bhaja is one of the most unique things among them. This Bengali delicacy is made by layering shor, which is a layer, that forms while boiling milk, and kheer, which is formed after boiling kheer and reducing it. Then dry fruits are added and lastly, the soft creamy thing is shaped like sandesh. Adhar Chandra Das was the creator of this and his shop is the oldest shop selling sweets.
